Puppy’s First Week Home

You just got your new Puppy, puppies are super curious in their early weeks so encourage yours to explore his new home. Show him around the nooks and spaces where he’ll be able to spend his time.

TEETHING & CHEWING

Puppy teething a question that is ALWAYS ASKED. At around 12 weeks of age. They also learn about their environment by putting things in their mouths. If he tries to chew on slippers or furniture, redirect him by giving him a toy instead.

If you discover he’s found his fav chew item of yours and something he shouldn’t have after the fact, don’t scold him. He won’t understand why you’re upset. If you do catch him in the act, give him a firm “No,” and redirect him with a toy or game with a more enticing toy.

FEEDING

Create a feeding schedule by feeding him at the same times each day and in the same location. Your breeder should let you know how much and what times. As well as give you some of their food! Sticking to a set schedule helps your pup learn what to expect and can also help you learn his need to go potty schedule which let’s jump into.

POTTY TRAINING

Potty training SHOULD begin immediately once you bring your puppy home. Consistency is key in potty training. Also having another dog who is potty trained makes this process SO MUCH MORE FOOL PROOF! They watch everything their big brother or sister does.

Start by showing your puppy his backyard, or potty pad area/grass, wherever that may be, and use the same phrase like “go potty” or my fav “be a good boy” Let him explore around and get familiar with that area and if he goes potty, praise him with the same voice and phrase.

Taking him out right after mealtime and before and after naptime can help reduce the chance of accidents in the house. This goes for bed time too! First thing in the am, first thing before bed.

DIARRHEA

It’s not a pretty subject but it’s pretty much the #1 issue that new pet owners have no idea how to handle and manage. The first few days your puppy will be open to a whole new world. They could of traveled by car or plane to get to you. Which naturally will make them a little uneasy. Or they could completely just bloom instantly. Regardless if your puppy is having #2 issues here is a few tips.

Switching food be sure to do your research on your breed what is the best food, what was the breeder feeding. Adding some Pure Pumpkin or white rice can help ease the tummy and help with digestion.

Making sure your puppy was dewormed properly. Once you get your puppy you should know his next shot appt as well as when he will need to be dewormed again. Most of the time your vet will do this anyways! But that could be the very reason diarrhea is a problem.
Make sure your puppy is getting enough water, also watch when they are outside you don’t want them eating random rocks and sticks or anything they shouldn’t be.

LEASH WALKING

Help him get used to his leash by taking him for short walks around your yard. Let him get used to wearing a collar. Most puppies will want to itch it off and that makes it uncomfortable for them!

EAR & NAIL CARE

Your vet will likely encourage you to play with your puppy’s ears and feet as well as establish a consistent dental health routine. All these activities will help you and your puppy in the long run, especially if medical conditions arise.

INTRODUCING PUPPY TO KIDS

Allowing your puppy to meet children of all ages will help him develop into a well-rounded dog who loves people of all ages and sizes.

Socialization and training are essential in helping your puppy become a well-mannered dog. Introducing to other dogs or puppies (as long as all are vaccinated) should be easy and will also create your dog to be puppy social!
